Hi,

after upgrading to the newest release of vlc
(vlc-0.9.9a-7.el5.rf.i386) for EL5, I am running into problems when
trying to transcode using x264:

$ vlc input.avi
':sout=#transcode{vcodec=x264,vb=800,scale=1,acodec=mp4a,ab=128,channels=2}:duplicate{dst=std{access=udp,mux=ts,dst=:1234}}'

[00000488] avcodec encoder error: cannot open encoder
[00000429] stream_out_transcode stream out error: cannot find video
encoder (module:any fourcc:x264)
[00000429] stream_out_transcode stream out error: cannot create video chain
[00000451] main packetizer error: cannot create packetizer output (dvsl)

I tried to downgrade to the previous version but yum reports that no
downgrade path is available.

Is the older version archived somewhere?

Best regards,
Mostafa

Of course, 'x264' in the command above should be 'h264', but the
problem is there nevertheless:

$ vlc input.avi
':sout=#transcode{vcodec=h264,vb=3000,scale=1,acodec=mp4a,ab=128,channels=2}:duplicate{dst=std{access=udp,mux=ts,dst=:1234}}'

No longer for RHEL5. Since newer VLC releases are impossible to compile
against RHEL5 (due to old toolkit versions in RHEL5) we only provide the
latest build for RHEL5.

My believe was that this build provides the best of VLC at that point, and
there were no known issues reported afaik. I have copies of older builds
available locally:

Maybe the 0.8.6i build, or the 0.9.8a build would be useful to test ? Or
if you want a particular build, I can make this available as well.

Just let me know.

Wait, that's really weird... I though that no changes other than
rebuilds against newer libraries were made to vlc since then?

Well, looking at the debug message from vlc, it seems that
'--disable-x264' was passed to the buildsystem for 0.9.9a-7. This
isn't reflected in the changelog and I don't have a copy of 0.9.9a-5
yet to check what the build option was for that.

IIRC, we moved to --disable-x264 to use the ffmpeg h264 implementation.
Since both ffmpeg and vlc have their own strict set of requirements it was
a pain to make both work in all cases (even with other hardware).

We could simply try it out again and see where it goes. Since the
buildsystem removes the failed buildlogs (of a certain release) as soon as
a successful build was made, I cannot go back to look at all the previous
attempts at making it work. It seldom was necessary.

I do agree a proper changelog in this case would be nice. But it would
require an additional final rebuild describing all the items done/undone,
which takes even more time after a long session of trial-and-error and
combinations... (because at that time it's still possible some other
packages fails against the updated requirements, forcing me to go back to
vlc and redo the packages).

Maybe the 0.8.6i build, or the 0.9.8a build would be useful to test ? Or if
you want a particular build, I can make this available as well.
Just let me know.
Brilliant! I think it was working fine with 0.9.9a-5. Would be great

I made available both the 0.9.9a-5 and 0.9.9a-6 build, because I think the
0.9.9a-6 build includes another rebuild against x264. The buildlogs should
be available when you read this, as well.

(It might take 12h though, depending on when the mirror picks it up)

If you could try a rebuild against the latest RPMforge with the options
you expect to work, that information could be useful as well.

Kind regards,

I did try rebuilding the package using vlc-0.9.9a-7.rf.src.rpm before
writing to the list but the build kept failing because of
libogg-devel. It complained about failing to find /usr/lib/libogg.la

The version of libogg-devel that I have is: libogg-devel-1.1.3-3.el5
and it does not have libogg.la.

Just checked 0.9.9a-5 and 0.9.9a-6. '5' works but '6' doesn't. It
seems '6' was also compiled with '--disable-x264'. Perhaps the problem
is actually in the new ffmpeg?

If you could try a rebuild against the latest RPMforge with the options you
expect to work, that information could be useful as well.

Cheers,

Maybe the 0.8.6i build, or the 0.9.8a build would be useful to test ? Or if
you want a particular build, I can make this available as well.
Just let me know.
Brilliant! I think it was working fine with 0.9.9a-5. Would be great
if you can make that available.
Wait, that's really weird... I though that no changes other than
rebuilds against newer libraries were made to vlc since then?

Hi,

after upgrading to the newest release of vlc
(vlc-0.9.9a-7.el5.rf.i386) for EL5, I am running into problems when
trying to transcode using x264:

$ vlc input.avi
':sout=#transcode{vcodec=x264,vb=800,scale=1,acodec=mp4a,ab=128,channels=2}:duplicate{dst=std{access=udp,mux=ts,dst=:1234}}'

[00000488] avcodec encoder error: cannot open encoder
[00000429] stream_out_transcode stream out error: cannot find video
encoder (module:any fourcc:x264)
[00000429] stream_out_transcode stream out error: cannot create video chain
[00000451] main packetizer error: cannot create packetizer output (dvsl)

I tried to downgrade to the previous version but yum reports that no
downgrade path is available.

Is the older version archived somewhere?

Best regards,
Mostafa

Of course, 'x264' in the command above should be 'h264', but the
problem is there nevertheless:

No longer for RHEL5. Since newer VLC releases are impossible to compile
against RHEL5 (due to old toolkit versions in RHEL5) we only provide the
latest build for RHEL5.

My believe was that this build provides the best of VLC at that point, and
there were no known issues reported afaik. I have copies of older builds
available locally:

if you want a particular build, I can make this available as well.

Just let me know.

Hi,

after upgrading to the newest release of vlc
(vlc-0.9.9a-7.el5.rf.i386) for EL5, I am running into problems when
trying to transcode using x264:

$ vlc input.avi
