[users] VLC Crash - Scientific Linux 6.0

Hello,

I am running Scientific Linux 6.0 and when I try to run vlc it crashes.

VLC media player 1.1.8 The Luggage (revision exported)
*** glibc detected *** /usr/bin/vlc: free(): invalid pointer:
0x00007f4c144923a0 ***

It seems the issue has something to do with taglib. Here is the VLC bug
report that I found for Fedora 13: http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/3701

A workaround is (re)moving
/usr/lib64/vlc/plugins/meta_engine/libtaglib_plugin.so.

Another workaround is running vlc with MALLOC_CHECK_=1 vlc.
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-516454.html

Seems like the best solution would be to remove the libtaglib_pulgin so
long as there isn't any adverse affects. Maybe it is possible to pass a
compile flag to not compile the plugin?

Sorry I can't be more helpful!

Thanks,
pyther

Is this something that can be fixed? Or does it go against policy?

Of course it can. I just don't have the time and (still :-( ) missing a
build host to follow up on that. If you can dig out the patch that
Fedora finally settled with I'll do my best to review and commit it.

Thanks!

I unfortunately don't see any suggested "fixes". I did find this bug
report from rpmfusion:
https://bugzilla.rpmfusion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1212 but did not see a
real resolution either.

VLC devs seemed to think it was a bug in libtag

As I said in the original mail, the workaround I am using is to
(re)move /usr/lib64/vlc/plugins/meta_engine/libtaglib_plugin.so

However, realistic this isn't probably the best solution.
