Yesterday, I went to install a new HP printer and I discovered that the
CentOS/rhel 5.5 version of hplip is very old and did not support my new
printer. I found an article which recommended that I install the
rpmforge testing repo version of hplip from here:

http://packages.sw.be/hplip/

So, I thought that I would give it a go and test it out, however, the
two download links that I tried on the above page did not work:

hplip-3.10.6-0.1.el5.test.i386.rpm
hplip-3.10.5-0.1.el5.test.i386.rpm

In any event, I went ahead and downloaded the hplip source tarball which
I compiled and installed on my machine such that I could get my printer
working so my printer config problem is solved. However, I thought that
I should send this post out to let Dag know that these links do not
work. Also, for future reference, is there another place to get hplip
rpm's at rpmforge?

I hope that this is the correct place to post this information. The
article that referenced the rpmforge repos was:

http://home.roadrunner.com/~computertaijutsu/hplip.html

Hi Gordon,

Thanks for the feedback. The download links did not work because the
HTTP redirects changed after we renamed the testing repository. So thanks
for letting us know.

I have fixed it now, feel free to try out the packages and send us any
feedback !

It would be nice if you post the results, especially if you do scanning
with an all-in-one--as you probably noted, the article to which you
linked (which I wrote) :), mentioned that as of July, the hplip rpm
didn't work with my particular scanner--it provided a print driver, but
the machine wouldn't scan.

Hi Scott,

Nice article!

Yes, I will be scanning and printing with an all-in-one device.
Yesterday, I was installing an HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 all-in-one. I
compiled the hplip source code using these instructions:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/centos.html

All printing and scanning functions appear to work perfectly on the
8500. However, for SANE to work with the scanner I had to change the
DeviceURI in /etc/cups/printers.conf from a "socket" type to a "hp" type
using "hp-makeuri <ip address>".

Just for reference, I own an HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 all-in-one as well
and both printing and scanning work fine on Fedora 13 with the
following packages from the official fedora repositories:

rpm -q hplip-gui.x86_64 hplip xsane.x86_64 xsane-gimp.x86_64 libsane-hpaio
hplip-gui-3.10.5-1.fc13.x86_64

xsane-0.997-10.fc13.x86_64
xsane-gimp-0.997-10.fc13.x86_64
libsane-hpaio-3.10.5-1.fc13.x86_64

Only needed to open :incoming UDP: 137, 138, 161, 427 and outgoing
TCP: 137, 139, 427, 9100, 9220, 9500 on the firewall and then hp-setup
correctly configured the printer and xsane was able to detect the
scanner automatically.
I did have to specify the printer's IP address for hp-setup to find it.

Did you have any problems with the RPMforge supplied 3.10.6 packages from:

http://packages.sw.be/hplip/

If you didn't try, that's no problem. I just wondered...

If you didn't try, that's no problem. I just wondered...
Didn't try them since the stock packages worked straight away.

Hi Dag,
I have another CentOS 5.5 office machine which will need a current
version of hplip sometime soon at which time I will try your package out
and I will let you know how it goes.
Thanks for your prompt reply!
Just for reference, I own an HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 all-in-one as well
and both printing and scanning work fine on Fedora 13 with the
rpm -q hplip-gui.x86_64 hplip xsane.x86_64 xsane-gimp.x86_64
?libsane-hpaio
hplip-gui-3.10.5-1.fc13.x86_64
hplip-3.10.5-1.fc13.x86_64
xsane-0.997-10.fc13.x86_64
xsane-gimp-0.997-10.fc13.x86_64
libsane-hpaio-3.10.5-1.fc13.x86_64
Only needed to open :incoming UDP: 137, 138, 161, 427 and outgoing
TCP: 137, 139, 427, 9100, 9220, 9500 on the firewall and then hp-setup
correctly configured the printer and xsane was able to detect the
scanner automatically.
I did have to specify the printer's IP address for hp-setup to find it.

Hi Dag and Scott,

I installed the following packages on my other CentOS 5.5 office machine:

hplip-3.10.6-0.1.el5.test.i386.rpm
hpijs-3.10.6-0.1.el5.test.i386.rpm
libsane-hpaio-3.10.6-0.1.el5.test.i386.rpm

I then configured a HP OfficeJet Pro L7780 which appears to be working
perfectly both printing and scanning. Of course, I haven't yet
exercised all possible printing and scanning options yet, however, so
far, so good.

Yesterday, I went to install a new HP printer and I discovered that
the CentOS/rhel 5.5 version of hplip is very old and did not support
my new printer. I found an article which recommended that I install
http://packages.sw.be/hplip/
So, I thought that I would give it a go and test it out, however,
hplip-3.10.6-0.1.el5.test.i386.rpm
hplip-3.10.5-0.1.el5.test.i386.rpm
In any event, I went ahead and downloaded the hplip source tarball
which I compiled and installed on my machine such that I could get
my printer working so my printer config problem is solved. However,
I thought that I should send this post out to let Dag know that
these links do not work. Also, for future reference, is there
another place to get hplip rpm's at rpmforge?
I hope that this is the correct place to post this information. The

Hi Gordon,
Thanks for the feedback. The download links did not work because the
HTTP redirects changed after we renamed the testing repository. So
thanks for letting us know.
I have fixed it now, feel free to try out the packages and send us
any feedback !

exercised all possible printing and scanning options yet, however, so
far, so good.

Hi Dag,
I have another CentOS 5.5 office machine which will need a current
version of hplip sometime soon at which time I will try your package
out and I will let you know how it goes.

Hi Dag and Scott,

I installed the following packages on my other CentOS 5.5 office machine:

hplip-3.10.6-0.1.el5.test.i386.rpm
hpijs-3.10.6-0.1.el5.test.i386.rpm
libsane-hpaio-3.10.6-0.1.el5.test.i386.rpm
