Hi all,

I was checking, via the command line, why Mplayer would not
successfully play a .wmv file. I reproduce a section of the error
output --
FATAL: Cannot initialize video driver.
VDecoder init failed :(
Opening video decoder: [dmo] DMO video codecs
Win32 LoadLibrary failed to load: wms10dmod.dll, /usr/lib/codecs/wms10dmod.dll
IMediaObject ERROR: 0x880252c could not open DMO DLL (0x0 : 0)
Failed to create DMO filter
ERROR: Could not open required DirectShow codec wms10dmod.dll.
You need to upgrade/install the binary codecs package.
Go to http://www.mplayerhq.hu/dload.html
VDecoder init failed :(
Cannot find codec matching selected -vo and video format 0x3253534D.
A check of the rpm dbase told me --
[root at GX1 mrtg]# rpm -qa \*codec\*
mplayer-codecs-20061022-1
mplayer-codecs-extra-20061022-1
Both codec packages have the 20061022 date but when I go to
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html#binary_codecs I see that
the current codec packages available have the 20071007 date.

It may not fix my non-playing .wmv file problem but could the codec
packages be updated to the latest available, please?

Regards,
Alan.

An appreciative RPMforge package user. :-)

Hi Alan,
your mplayer-codecs-* rpms don't seem to come from rpmforge, not sure
where you got them though. Myself I use the 20071007 tar.bz2 (no rpm).
Cheers,

Well, yeah, I don't think we ever provided binary codecs for mplayer, at
least I don't see this now from the SPECs. Maybe it's a good idea to
package them, but I personally don't use them, so...

Hi Yury,

Like other optional bits of the Mplayer family that are available from
RPMforge, it might be a good idea to offer the codecs as a package.

As I've mentioned to Nicolas, above, I've no idea from where they originated.

If you are up to helping us with that I will be more than happy to try
to find some time to review and commit your patches...

Otherwise there is a slim chance of it happening anytime soon, but we'll
surely keep that on file.

Sure. I've added it to the bottom of my list. When it reaches the top,
I'll seek out the existing RPMforge .src.rpm and see it I can make a
sensible addition. :-)

I've been able to play wmv files without issue. As far as I can see,
all I have here is the standard mplayer from rpmforge.

Yes, Scott. Almost all .wmv files play correctly for me. However there
is one file in particular that causes Mplayer to spit out the message
that I've shown in my initial post. And Mplayer was quite clear in
mentioning the codecs . . .

Hi Nicolas,

Yes, I've had an oops moment! A closer look at the packages tell me
that they are not from RPMforge, but I have absolutely no idea from
whence I obtained them.

I'll remove them both and then install from the tarball. Thanks for
the clarification.

your mplayer-codecs-* rpms don't seem to come from rpmforge, not sure where
you got them though. Myself I use the 20071007 tar.bz2 (no rpm).
Hi Nicolas,

Yes, I've had an oops moment! A closer look at the packages tell me
that they are not from RPMforge, but I have absolutely no idea from
whence I obtained them.

I'll remove them both and then install from the tarball. Thanks for
the clarification.

Well, yeah, I don't think we ever provided binary codecs for mplayer, at
least I don't see this now from the SPECs. Maybe it's a good idea to
package them, but I personally don't use them, so...

Hi all,

I was checking, via the command line, why Mplayer would not
successfully play a .wmv file. I reproduce a section of the error
output --
FATAL: Cannot initialize video driver.
VDecoder init failed :(
Opening video decoder: [dmo] DMO video codecs
Win32 LoadLibrary failed to load: wms10dmod.dll, /usr/lib/codecs/wms10dmod.dll
IMediaObject ERROR: 0x880252c could not open DMO DLL (0x0 : 0)
Failed to create DMO filter
ERROR: Could not open required DirectShow codec wms10dmod.dll.
You need to upgrade/install the binary codecs package.
Go to http://www.mplayerhq.hu/dload.html
VDecoder init failed :(
Cannot find codec matching selected -vo and video format 0x3253534D.
A check of the rpm dbase told me --
[root at GX1 mrtg]# rpm -qa \*codec\*
mplayer-codecs-20061022-1
mplayer-codecs-extra-20061022-1
Both codec packages have the 20061022 date but when I go to
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html#binary_codecs I see that
the current codec packages available have the 20071007 date.

It may not fix my non-playing .wmv file problem but could the codec
packages be updated to the latest available, please?

Regards,
Alan.

An appreciative RPMforge package user. :-)
